Public Health Law: Past & Present training update

By examining past and present events in public health, we can learn about how practitioners have used laws and policies to stop the spread of communicable diseases, set minimum wage requirements, establish guidelines and codes for safe housing, and enact other health-promoting innovations. Moreover, we can examine how failure to center health equity in such efforts can lead to present-day inequities.

Public Health Law: Past & Present, one of the free online trainings available through the Public Health Law Academy, explores how health departments can advance their work amid an evolving legal landscape, balancing their authority to protect the public’s health with the rights of affected individuals. This training and its facilitator’s package were updated in June 2024 and center health equity with new examples and case studies. Public Health Law: Past & Present is one course in the Public Health Law Academy training plan, which delivers a certificate of completion.

The Public Health Law Academy is a partnership between the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and ChangeLab Solutions that provides free resources and trainings to build the capacity of aspiring and practicing public health professionals at all levels of government.
