In fall 2017, the California state Office of Planning and Research (OPR) published new guidelines for general plans – the documents that cities and localities use to guide city planning and future development. This new version is a groundbreaking revision because it makes specific recommendations for how general plans can address community health and reduce health disparities.
Writing on the Community Commons website, senior planner Tina Yuen suggests that “thanks to the new guidelines, communities across the state working to integrate health and equity concerns into their general plans will have a free, publicly available resource from a trusted source to guide that work.”
