Big Tobacco Tastes Defeat

How San Francisco ended sales of flavored tobacco products

Webinar
Tobacco Prevention

On June 5, 2018, San Francisco voters once again stood tall against the tobacco industry, rejecting Big Tobacco’s attempt to overturn the city’s groundbreaking policy prohibiting the sale of all menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products.

More than 100,000 San Francisco residents joined in sending Big Tobacco a clear message: Stop targeting our kids and underserved communities with your candy- and menthol-flavored poison! The $12 million Big Tobacco spent in opposition to the policy proves that prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products, including menthol, threatens their ability to lure people into a lifetime of addiction.

On this webinar, Big Tobacco Tastes Defeat: San Francisco Ended Sales of Flavored Tobacco Products & You Can, Too!, presenters with expertise in flavored tobacco regulation and who were involved in San Francisco’s successful fight against Big Tobacco addressed the public health and equity implications of menthol cigarettes and other flavored tobacco products. They discussed how San Francisco enacted their historic policy despite Big Tobacco’s well-funded opposition campaign. They also explored how other California communities can build on this momentum by pursuing their own policies prohibiting the sale of all flavored tobacco products, including menthol.

Presenters included staff from the California Tobacco Control Program, African American Tobacco Control Leadership Council at The Loop, the Tobacco Free Project at San Francisco Department of Public Health, and ChangeLab Solutions.
