All positions are in our Oakland offices.

Legal Internships

We generally accept rising second and third year law student interns each summer. We occasionally have openings during the school year, as well. There are a limited number of paid internship positions. You are strongly encouraged to seek funding through your school program.

The first round of applications from 2Ls is accepted from August 15 through September 15 for the following summer’s internships. Applications for remaining positions, if any, are accepted from 1Ls and 2Ls until January 18. Sign up to receive an email alert when new job announcements are posted.

Planning or Policy Internships

When offered, summer internships are generally available to students enrolled in graduate programs in Public Health, Public Policy, Planning, or related programs. There are a limited number of paid internship positions. You are strongly encouraged to seek funding through your school program.

Applications are accepted December 14 to February 15. To apply, please follow the instructions in the job announcement. Sign up to receive an email alert when new job announcements are posted.

Undergraduate Interns

When offered, these are paid summer positions. They are not professional level internships – we reserve those for people in graduate programs. Rather, they provide an opportunity to experience our workplace and get to know the professionals in our practice areas, while doing administrative and clerical work necessary to keep our organization running. We make every attempt to “connect the dots” between the tasks assigned to interns and how they help us move our work forward. In addition, interns are invited to attend brown bag training sessions with graduate interns and new employees whenever they are offered, and to attend staff meetings and team meetings as learning experiences.

Applications are accepted January 19 to March 31. To apply, please follow the instructions in the job announcement. Sign up to receive an email alert when new job announcements are posted.

Our process

From a large number of applications, we identify approximately 20 candidates, each of whom will be invited to a phone interview. Those who are the strongest match for the position are invited for an in-person/Skype interview. For some positions, an additional job-simulation exercise will be included in the process. Reference checks are completed, and an offer is made approximately four to eight weeks after the submission period closes.
